When the FDA Talks, People Listen

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has jurisdiction over food, meat, prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and much more. They control which new products make it to market and which don’t. They also control whether products can be sold direct to consumers. Currently, the FDA has issued a warning to manufacturers regarding caffeine powder.

The FDA doesn’t have jurisdiction over powdered caffeine, but they can exert influence. The FDA issued warning letters to five distributors of pure powdered caffeine, saying the products put consumers at risk. Two young men died last year from a caffeine overdose from powdered caffeine. What people may not realize is that one teaspoon (this is smaller than a tablespoon) of powdered caffeine is equivalent to 28 cups of coffee! That’s crazy. That shouldn’t be available for people to misuse.

Sometimes one cup of coffee can provide a caffeine rush and faster heartbeat. Imagine what 28 cups can do. Most of the companies who received the letters have stopped selling powdered caffeine to consumers and will sell to manufacturers as ingredients in products where the quantity is highly controlled.

We make no secret of not being fond of products with artificial stimulants. We think juicing is a good way to get energy, not ingesting caffeine tablets. Not everyone feels this way. The FDA is needed to protect people from themselves. We’re glad people are listening.
