Tips For Staying Active At Your Desk Job

If you wear a smartwatch, you are quite familiar with the pesky nudge to “stand.” While that can be as annoying as a mother’s huck to stand up straight, it’s for the same good reason: you and your well-being. And a better well-being makes for a much happier person, on and off the job.  Right? No matter how active you think you are after clocking out, it never hurts to squeeze a little more “me” time when planted at a desk for hours on end to help get the kinks out.
What a difference a day can “not” ache
Stand! Standing is a quick form of exercise and an alarming wake-up call for sluggish blood that prefers to sleep rather than flow on the job. This is not an infomercial, but imagine a lifestyle change that does not cost a cent or require a video, private trainer, or classroom instructor. It does involve little effort with A, B, and C movements and can be completed before you can say “deadline when?”
Take five. FYI, there are many ways to ward off office pains (whoever they are) sans gym. Some very effective refresh-all-over moves can be gained with the very things that move you: your feet. Take a desk break and give it a whirl.
  1. Stretch legs under that desk. Oh! Your soul will thank you!
  2. Circle ankles one way, then the other, in opposition. A mental wake-up call!
  3. Flex and point feet, with or without shoes. You may hear cracking thanks!
  4. Massage, pull, and stretch those toes. Nerve center alert: wards off crankyitis!
  5. Roll feet on a tennis ball. Ooch, ouch, mmmm! 
Always feel good. Because we are such diligent workers immersed in deep mind/less projects, our poor bodies pay a price. We get hunched (over the computer) backs, muscle spasms, random pains, stiffness, headaches, and what not.  Why do you think you feel so great after a gym workout, run, or walk? It’s called movement!
A good mantra. Stand when you can sit, move when you can stand, and
think like a cat or dog: stretch it for all it’s worth, just don’t scratch or bite!
Walk, walk, walk, then walk some more! Walk to the restroom, kitchen, or water cooler. Walk at lunchtime. Take steps, not the elevator, whenever possible. It all adds up to body/mind caregiving that will make a world of difference for you.
Don’t leave home without it. Whether you wear Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung, Apple, or nothing at all, it’s easy peasy to incorporate standing, moving, and stretching into your day.
