Feeling a bite in the autumn air? Yes, winter, and snowstorms, are coming. So are we brooding already? Not really, just wondering if it would be a good idea to name blizzards, like we do tropical storms. They’d have identity on Twitter then, they’d be tweetable. Would that be advantageous?
Such reflections arise because The Washington Post has raised the blizzard-naming matter in a post, “Would naming winter storms be a better idea if more organizations got on board?”
Who's naming them now? Who else but the Weather Channel. It’s about to release its winter storm names for the upcoming season. “What’s important is to lead as a community in this social media era,” says Mary M. Glackin, senior vice president for public-private partnerships at the Weather Company (which owns the Weather Channel).
“During major snow events,” she adds, the reach on Twitter has been over a billion. What would our reach be with all of us working together feeding into the same system to keep people informed during these hazardous events?”
To get named, The Post's Angela Fritz notes, a snowstorm "must meet the National Weather Service winter-storm warning criteria, and it must be expected to impact at least two million people and/or 400,000 sq. km."
“For its part,” Fritz continues, “ the National Weather Service still has no plans to consider the naming of winter storms, and no official conversations between the two organizations have yet occurred.” Surprised? Where’s Frosty the facilitator?
