Tips for Responding to Your Strengths & Weaknesses

After you’ve responded to questions about your current and prior employment, you might be asked to name your strengths and weaknesses.

First, remember that your integrity is one of the most important qualities that the interviewer will be gauging.  Therefore, only tell her or him things that are true and that people who know you would back up.

Here are some suggestions that most hiring authorities appreciate:

  • I have a high level of energy

  • I know how to use time wisely

  • I know how to select the right priorities

  • I know how to communicate clearly and concisely

  • I know how to establish and maintain good relations with others in an organization

  • I try to do my job so that my image is that of a workhorse, not a showhorse

  • I don’t try to reinvent the wheel.  I just find out what my boss wants me to do and if she or he has a preference for how they want it done.

  • I can be trusted with sensitive information

  • I’m willing to work hard and burn the midnight oil when necessary

  • I’m a reliable, loyal team player, free of jealousy

What are your biggest weaknesses?

  • Weaknesses, huh?  Well, if you ask my wife/husband/boyfriend/girlfried, they could probably give you a list this long - ( hold your outstretched hands apart as you speak).  But seriously, I’d say my biggest weakness is probably hardsell sales.  I just don’t think I’d do very well trying to sell something like used cars)

No matter what, if anything, the interviewer says after you’ve responded to the strengths/weaknesses questions, it’s always smart to find an opening to remind them that the most important reason why they should hire you is because “I’ll do the job exactly the way you want it done.”

The above are mainly designed to prompt your own THINKING about these two questions.
