With the holidays quickly approaching, many young professionals want nothing more than a job they love. The holidays often pass by with family and friends and the things that are truly important in life, and then it hits — the holidays are over and you’re back to being an intern or being that graduate looking to break into your industry. In other words, it’s okay to have a wish list this holiday season, and it’s okay that this wish list be centered around your career.
This holiday season, it’s important that you understand all of the online tactics you can put in place to help make your dreams a reality. Personal branding and your online presence will sometimes make or break your next job interview, so the sooner you can get started, the better.
A Few Online Reminders for New Professionals Looking for a Career in 2018
Below are not only a few different things that should be on a holiday wish list for every young professional, but how to actually make these things come true:
Start your own blog.
If you don’t want a blog, you should. Having a blog takes a lot of work, but it will prove to employers that you really understand your industry. It’s a great way to connect with others and talk about the issues at hand. If you already have a blog, wish this holiday season that Google will really notice. Download this plugin (for Firefox, or the Google one for your browser) and check the PR of your blog. If it’s a 3, wish for a 5.
Coming True: Creating a blog is actually a lot of fun, it’s just getting started that can be overwhelming. Consider first finding a hosting company that you like (I use iPage and am very happy) for just a few dollars per month. Download WordPress, and it is usually pretty self-explanatory from there. Working to improve the PR of your website is a bit tougher and more complicated, but it can happen with just a little bit of SEO knowledge or hiring someone to help. Get a resume critique, and use those tips on your LinkedIn profile.
Every young professional should make sure they have a top-notch resume or CV. You have all of the information you need to work with; it is just about the way you write it and the format in which you present it. Believe it or not, this can be a bit tricky, so it’s something that many are still lacking.
Coming True: Making this wish come true is as easy as working with a recruiting agency or career center at your college or university. You may have to pay a bit of money, but it’s well worth it to have someone critique your resume. These people have seen many different resumes and know what employers want, and this could make all the difference for your job hunt in 2015.
Work toward a few more LinkedIn views.
It’s no secret that this is the social network for professionals, so a few more LinkedIn views is an obvious wish list must-have.
Coming True: The best way to make this wish come true is to continue to try and make connections with those in your industry. Every single time you apply for a job, go to LinkedIn and find the boss or the company and try to connect. People will appreciate your persistence. LinkedIn is also a great place to look for jobs, and employers will be able to see that you’re looking at their company’s profile, so you could form a connection that way.
