The Perfect Content Marketing Opportunity: 'Write for Us'
In a recent post I offered to arrange to have a column written by my LinkedIn contacts published in a reputable publication – for free. But it seems the once-magic word “free” has lost its luster, or perhaps my Linkies are too famous and busy to bother to enhance their thought-leadership status with a free sample of content marketing.

So for those dyed-in-the-wool PR do-it-yourselfers, you can simply just do it — yourself. No matter what industry you toil in, product or service you sell, there are more opportunities to be published than one can, well, shake a PR pitch at.

Simply start by booting up Google and searching for "write for us" and a topic (i.e., marketing). You will be astounded by the myriad entries offering you would-be experts the opportunity to let fly with your insights and opinions. And these are not loser publications; many have large readerships and excellent reputations.
For example...
We welcome and love new contributions from our growing community. Here's what you need to know:
  • Word count: No minimums but posts typically run between 250 and 800 words. Please stay under 800 words.
  • Tone: Inclusive, accessible and generally positive. Take a look around and see what we've previously posted.
  • Original Content: We ask that posts submitted be unique and original to MindBodyGreen. We do not accept posts that have already been published or submitted elsewhere online (not even on your personal blog) or that you plan to distribute to other websites.
That's a pretty typical entry. Online publications want only original content, are savvy to SEO link/tag snakes, and demand good grammar and spelling, but they don't demand thesis-length manuscripts. Writers’ guidelines are clearly posted on these sites so the would-be writer has no excuse for messing up his or her column.

Now you no longer have any excuses not to jump into the content marketing game and raise your leadership profile. However, should you find you have difficulty developing topics, handling the writing chores, building an ongoing publishing schedule, or integrating published columns into your marketing outreach, I'm here to help — that's my business.
