Take Time to Recharge

Allow us a time-out moment. How many of them are we takining these days? Most likely you'll answer, "Not enough." But you'll probably agree that it's important to step back occasionally from the onslaught of events, devices and opportunities to recenter, reframe, refocus, call it what you will. It's the place where true creativity, freshness and newness, comes from. Pondering is one of the most important relational states of all.

We're drawn to this quiet place by a post from Scott Belsky on Behance's 99% blog,  "What Happened to Downtime? The Extinction of Deep Thinking & Sacred Space." These are times we can connect with our unconscious, or deeper selves, and come up with fresh insights, but they are increasingly threatened by busyness.

That's largely because, Scott says, we've been drawn to belonging and connecting from the dawn of time: "Our need for a sense of belonging comes right after physical safety." Yet if we're always in touch, in some manner, with others how do we keep in touch with ourselves?

Scott's post suggests some ways, under headings like "Daily doses of deep thinking," and "Meditation and naps to clear the mind." His basic concern, though, is that "the potential of our own creativity is rapidly being compromised by the era we live in. I believe that genius in the 21st century will be attributed to people who are able to unplug from the constant state of reactionary workflow, reduce their amount of insecurity work, and allow their minds to solve the great challenges of our era."

Take some time to think about that.
