Social Media Trends for PR Folks
Here's one expert's view of trends in social media as they relate to public relations. PR itself has a lot yet to learn about using social media effectively, Brendan Cooper feels, and these year-end reflections are a good place to start. Brendan, who has a PR background, advises that social media require depth and skill and feels that PR agencies still aren't "getting it."

Among the "trends" Cooper notes:

• Social media keep changing (Delicious just disappeared, Facebook recently got a makeover) and require regular relearning, an annoyance to users. 

• Making money ("monetization") from most social media sites is hard to do.

• Freelancers will find social media "a tough gig".

• Digital agencies "get" social media more than their PR brethren do.

• While social media use rises, broadcast and mainstream media  keep racking up much wider exposure.

• Facebook will continue to dominate among social media channels.

• Dashboard sites like Netvibes (and paper.li) will keep growing as means of monitoring social media.

• Social media will work best for big companies that have stuff to sell.

All of which make social media a fascinating but tough field to master.
