Ryan May: 10 Years as a PR Blogger

Today is PR blogging day on Flack Me. That's because of a web post by Christina Milanowski of Maccabee PR in Minneapolis, who is interviewing Ryan May on the 10th anniversary of the creation of his blog Minnesota Public Relations (MNPR Jobs followed three years later). There's also a list by with the date of creation of PR blogs through 2006 and a further list with more blogs. (In 2006 there were at least 400 PR blogs.)

Ryan May's blog was one of the first 10 PR blogs in the world; he started it when he was writing for the Minnesota PRSA newsletter. "I had companies like Target and others bring me in to discuss how they should handle blogger relations," he recalls. "I was flattered."

Ryan's reflections on blogging include: "You have to have an appetite to blog. Blogging can be exhausting," "Think about your focus," (he wouldn't have focused solely on Minnesota) and "It takes time to become established" (like about two years). It's fun to hear from a modern-day communications pioneer!

There should be lots of inspiration here if you're thinking about starting a PR blog — or any sort of blog — of your own.
