Publicizing Your Social Media Presence

As more and more communication migrates to mobile phones, reaching people using them illustrates the PR challenges of new media for organizations of all kinds. They're different, yet much the same suggests a list of "52 Ways to Promote Your iPhone App" compiled by Scott Lorenz, president of Westwind Communications Public Relations.

Not all organizations, of course, have iPhone apps, but many that don't -- profit and non-profit alike -- should be considering them. Once you have an app -- or, indeed, any form of Web or mobile communication -- how do you get people to know about and use it?

His generous list is illustrative of the tactical techniques and challenges presented by new media. Media coverage, though, is still an important element -- old PR meets the new. Strategy, too, continues to be a basic element -- "Do I have a PR strategy for continuous year-round media coverage for our iPhone app?"  (Substitute blog, Web site, social network, Twitter, etc. for 'iPhone app.")

As Lorenz is demonstrating for his own firm, PR shops that develop expertise in new media are likely to have plenty of opportunities to assist organizations interested in coming to grips with the new media. Indeed, if they're not interested, they may not be around much longer, or at least not prospering.

On this Memorial Day weekend, start -- or rev up -- your social media engines by getting acquainted with Lorenz's list.
