Could it have come to this? Sadly, yes. In San Francisco, police officers “are being asked to combat racism in the ranks and take a pledge to turn in colleagues displaying intolerant behavior, such as slurs and jokes targeting people of color, gays and women.” When police officers have relational problems requiring such pledges, we are all taken down a few pegs.
“I will not tolerate hate or bigotry in our community or from my fellow officers,” the San Francisco pledge states, “I will confront intolerance and report any such conduct without question or pause.”
“The (San Francisco) department,” the AP story adds, “has also launched the website http://notonmywatchsfpd.org/ which instructs citizens and officers on how to file complaints against the police…”
The pledge is part of a “Not on My Watch” campaign that was being developed “long before” the shooting by five San Francisco police officers of Mario Woods, a young black man clutching a kitchen knife on Dec. 2. These are complex situations, but they need to end short of death, however trying they are for police officers.
