We want to preface this by saying we are big fans of both parties involved. However, a critical eye must be able to examine the things it loves and the things it does not.
Pepsi came out recently with a two-minute clip featuring the star of its latest Super Bowl Halftime Show, Katy Perry.
As we said before, we grew up in a Pepsi household. We'll take a Pepsi product over a Coke nearly any day of the week. Especially now being in North Carolina, the founding grounds of the cola, we would do it just out of principle.
As for Katy Perry, well — we don't listen to the music, but we're huge fans.
So when we saw news of a Super Bowl teaser featuring the two, we thought, how awesome is this?
After we saw it, we were a bit perplexed.
Take a look for yourself.
The spot is very light-hearted and quirky and had only a few shots with Pepsi, which happened more towards the end of the spot. But to us, as a member of the older part of the demographic who knows who Katy Perry is and is familiar with her counterparts, it was balancing way too close on the side of overdone.
Hyped for Halftime? Hmm. We're not too sure, Pepsi.
Based on the teaser, and on Perry's previous antics, the show is sure to be pretty ridiculous. Katy Perry is quite the performer, and we're sure that Pepsi knows that it has to do an even better job based on the great performance Bruno Mars put on last year.
In the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, if the trend stays the same, we are sure that we will see more from Ms. Perry and Pepsi. Maybe by then they will find the groove and give us something we can all actually get hyped for.
