PR's U.S. Statistical Portrait
Here's the page on Public Relations Specialists from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010–11 Edition. Why post it? Because it provides something of a consensus on the nature of PR work, along with the news that "Employment of public relations specialists is expected to grow 24 percent from 2008 to 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations." That's good news indeed.

We don't know how the current uncertain nature of the economy affects this, though. Even so, take a look at PR's official consensus portrait — at least as the profession existed when it was written. (Don't know whether this page is updated once posted.)

Relatedly, Ragan's PR Daily is reporting a "Huge leap in demand for marketing jobs with social media skills".
