Thought you might be interested in a tangible indication of where the PR industry is at with respect to the Internet and social media. Here's a want ad from a New York PR firm for a SocialMedia Strategist/Account Executive. Note the stress on facility in such social media as Twitter, Facebook et al. Planning for PR campaigns has a heavy social media emphasis.
The unidentified agency is stressing "Conceptualizing integrated campaigns utilizing social media platforms, websites and blog content/comments, knowledge of tradition (stet) Pr tactics is a bonus." Knowledge of traditional public relations tactics is a bonus! You get bonus points for knowing what planning, strategizing and all the other traditional PR skills are about. But for this position, at least, you need to have 2-5 years of agency experience and be "expert at using Facebook, Twitter and other social media/digital platforms."
The requestor is a "growing public relations and social media agency." Note the conjunction of the two attributes. This ad makes it about as plain as it can be. The other folks in the firm, if they aren't skilled in social media, had best move aside. This new hire will be in tune with the future.
And (more of the same) here's a press release for a panel discussion, held yesterday at a Social Media Week conference in San Francisco, on "How Mobile is Revolutionizing the Connection Between Brands and Consumers."
