Like it or not, Obamacare is going to provide a major, highly visible test of PR and marketing techniques. Implementation of the complex health care law has already been delayed to 2015, amid fierce partisan bickering in Washington. But the Administration is apparently hoping for some bigtime PR help on getting the law understood and its state-level "exchanges" up and running. So how would you like to be Weber Shandwick or Porter Novelli?
Both PR firms, the Healthwatch blog reports, have gotten sizable contracts to help implement Obamacare, totaling, in all, so far, some $64 million. People are going to expect to see results for money like that. We advise you of this at this point because the Healthwatch blog looks as though it may be a good place to watch, or at least get clues to, the unfolding PR saga of healthcare reform. We'd only add that President Obama himself, from his bully pulpit, has a major opportunity, if not a pressing need, to contribute to the public's understanding of the stakes, for all levels of U.S. society, in the slowly emerging new healthcare system. Here is one such occasion, via a USA Today report.
