This season, being Jewish is in and not being Jewish is out — at least when it comes to the holidays. This year, Hanukkah begins on the same day as Thanksgiving for the first time since 1888!
Little Jewish children everywhere often feel left out this time of year as they watch their fellow Christian schoolmates embrace the Christmas season, starting sometimes before Halloween. The Hanukkah celebrating is often run over, much like Grandma, by the Christmas spirit.
This year though, little Jewish-American children will be proud that their Christmas Eve will be spent watching movies and enjoying local Chinese fare with their family — after all, they’re going all out at Thanksgiving!
Move over, sweet potato casserole, there’s a new potato king in town — say hello to sweet potato latkes.
Is that cranberry sauce on your table? I think not — it’s cranberry-apple sauce!
Thanksgiving is quickly being rebranded this year as “Thanksgivukah,” thanks in part to the Manischewitz Company, which is fully embracing the Thanksgiving-Hanukkah spirit offering a themed microsite in honor of this once-in-a-lifetime celebration.
Brands such as the Manischewitz Company will especially benefit as families everywhere look to bring a little Hanukkah spirit to the table, even if they’re interfaith, part Jewish, or just a fan of Woody Allen.
Restaurants to bloggers are hoping to capitalize on — and embrace — both holidays with substitutions for ingredients such as kosher salt instead of sea salt in traditional Thanksgiving recipes, Challah-enhanced stuffing, and Thanksgivukah table decoration ideas.
This might be an extremely positive happenstance as Hanukkah often gets pushed aside during the winter months and Hanukkah celebrators must settle for a dingy shelf here and there at local stores, offering minimal amounts of Hanukkah greeting cards, decorations, menorahs, and even Hanukkah-themed Christmas ornaments for families celebrating both holidays.
This year, it’s hip to be cool and what’s cool is Thanksgivukah!
