J. P. Morgan Reassures Its Neediest Customers
National Public Radio reports that J. P. Morgan intends to cover social security and welfare payments for any of its customers who might lose them in the government shutdown crisis. It's not likely that either funding stream will be interrupted. (Welfare payments, of course, are basically state obligations.) But it's good PR for JP Morgan Chase's Jamie Dimon to be on the side of seniors and the downtrodden now that the word is out that the bank spent more than $9 billion in the last quarter alone — nearly 40 percent of its revenue during the period — on legal fees and fines. 

We'd be interested in knowing, just out of curiosity, how many welfare recipients are customers of J.P. Morgan. Social Security, of course, goes to a wider customer base.

Meanwhile, in Connecticut, community action on behalf of the needy by Citizens Bank has produced hundreds of bags of food for parents whose children normally participate in the Head Start Program, stalled by the federal government shutdown. Those donations — also good PR — came via the bank's "Customer Experience Week" program.
