Advertising Week 2014 has just begun, and according to many sources, NYC is supposed to have hundreds of thousands of business, pop culture, and marketing professionals ascending on it to attend the hundreds of events planned throughout the event. Each day seems to have 60–80 events a day, and with the website or app filter, one can create their own schedule to make the week their own.
We are happy about Advertising Week finally gaining the attention that it deserves. It is very cool to have advertising professionals from all over gather and spread ideas and best practices about the things going on in the industry. We hope, too, that the bad is discussed just as much as the good. Our failures in the advertising world need attention, too, or else those issues continue to be problems.
We've thought that before, and have been very pleased in the past years to see Advertising Week try to divert attention to those topics. But a council of folks — though a great start — can only do so much. As we all know, it takes interest for a conversation to gain momentum. Unless people are moved to face the uncomfortable issues, not much is going to change.
At least Advertising Week is laying the foundation of something greater than all of us. It seems that the headliners are getting bigger, too. According to the Advertising Week hashtag (#AWXI) some of the heavy hitters include Wayne Brady, Jessica Alba, Harvey Weinstein, Miles Nadal of MDC Partners, WPP's Sir Martin Sorrell, and Michael Roth of IPG, Levy of Publicis, and a chairman emeritus of DDB.
That's pretty awesome.
Also, if you cannot attend any of the events, many of them will be streamed live.
Advertising Week, you've done good.
So if you plan on attending, please feel free to send us some kind of video postcard about what you've learned and seen, and we'll post it (keep it tasteful, please) and share what best practices you've seen or heard. We'd love to hear from Advertising Week attendees.
Enjoy the week, and we'll be following live and on twitter (@advertisingweek).
