Imagine you are a public speaker. You are invited to speak at a gathering where the participants are anxiously waiting to listen and write down every word you have to say. The person who booked you pays you good money and expects you to deliver.
Every time a marketer puts forth information, they are performing as if they were a public speaker. We are paid to present messages to the publics we serve.
And yes, it's okay to be nervous. It is okay to be uncomfortable.
We love the fact that we get a chance to work with high schoolers on a daily basis. The uncertainty fills the air. These rising adults are facing questions about becoming an adult, where they might go to school, sexual curiosity, homework, finals, state exams, classwork, jobs, and internships.
The kids face these questions head on.
Why can't our industry be okay with uneasiness?
We face the C-Suite and are barraged with questions about ROI, engagement, SEO, ranking, and we are expected to perform at great lengths with budgets that come up short.
To walk in with a load of confidence is tough to do.
We can be confident in our abilities, to be sure. But to demand and expect perfection in a flawed system is asking a lot.
We need to have this conversation. If we aren't our own advocates, nothing will change.
