In today’s business world, we all want to get ahead and reach our career goals. It’s important to have a plan to know how to get there. But too many times, an important factor is left out: gratitude. Sometimes we focus so much on getting to the next level that we forget to take a moment to celebrate our accomplishments (being thankful for them), as well as thank those who have helped us along the way. Showing gratitude in both ways, on your own by acknowledging your accomplishments and thanking others, is an important part of achieving your goals and a great way to keep up with your networking connections. Just make sure that you are being genuine. Here are a few tips on how to show gratitude to your networking connections.
- Thank-you notes. Write emails to your contacts to thank them for something they have done for you. This could be done on an actual card, or as an email. We prefer a handwritten note when possible. This is a great way to keep in touch and let them know that you appreciate them. One of our clients made it a point to write gratitude emails to her list of contacts at different times of the year. This made it easy to stay in touch and solidify her relationships with them. To keep track of why you would want to thank someone, jot down when someone does something nice or helpful that benefits you. Did someone send you an inspirational quote and it helped you have a better outlook in the week? Thank them for thinking of you. Did someone send you a GIF that made you laugh despite a work crisis? Thank them for helping you to see the bigger picture.
- Reciprocate. Thank those who help you and find ways to help others. If you read an article you think that one of your networking connections would enjoy, send it on. Write a few sentences about why it made you think of them. Is there a book that you know that a coworker would love on sale? Buy it for them, even if it is the Kindle version, and send them the link. Did your assistant save you from a scheduling disaster? Buy him or her some flowers. Keep in mind you don’t have to make grand gestures here; simple things sometimes are the best ways of showing your business and network contacts you appreciate them.
- Ask for input. Another way to show gratitude is by asking questions or advice. If you are dealing with a new business situation, or you aren’t sure how to handle a delicate matter at work, reach out to those you trust who have more experience. This lets others know that you value their opinions and guidance.
