The way we practice it, at least, public relations is pretty sedentary work. We make an explicit choice to include exercise in our daily round. Two sisters we've discovered on the Web do a humorous blog -- Fun and Fit: Q and A with K and A -- and one of them, Alexandra Williams, offers this post: "Fitness Tips for Public Relations Pros." A true public service.
Alexandra knows fitness but finds the PR world "a bit hazy," so she did some research (she says it was "extensive", but we'll be the judge of that) and came up with these pointers:
1. Communication – "If you want to be a good communicator and speaker, you need strong abs and a megaphone so you can be heard over the madding crowd."
2. Measuring – "You need to do a combination of cardio (movement – i.e., running after clients) and strength training (i.e., lifting your iPhone, computer, netbook and other necessary items).
3. Strategic and tactical planning, media and public relations, and crisis management – "Boot Camp! in high heels." For the male contingent, that's actual boots.
4. Message development – "By the time you arrive at this, you should be Oh, so tired. "So forget the message and go for a massage."
For us, we use the iPhone apps "Couch to 5K" to get in some daily running and "Fit Builder" for indoor workouts, but whatever else you may do, at least get up periodically and stretch!
