Fear. This could be the biggest thing holding you back in your career. Nine out of ten times this is an obstacle for clients, because it’s not just about not knowing career direction, but a fear of making a change and trying something new. We encourage our clients to make decisions with strength and positivity. Many times we react to situations with feelings of fear, weakness, or negative energy. But really, fear prevents you from being open to new directions and solutions. How you can get over your fears? Here is a three-step process to dealing with your fears.
1. Write them down. When you write down your fears on paper and can actually look at them, this helps you to be more objective and rational. Perhaps they are deep fears, or maybe they are more simple, but write them down anyway. Now think about what would happen if you made a decision based on your fears. Will you have a positive outcome?
2. Be reasonable. Go over the fears you wrote down. Are they accurate fears? There is a quote from the book Energy Leadership that I love that says, “Problems and challenges are manifestations from a fear-based perspective.” Many times our fears cause us to be unreasonable with our goals and how we reach our full potential. Sometimes it could be a deeper-seated issue, like Impostor Syndrome, but it’s natural for everyone to have some kind of fear. Recognizing that it is a natural feeling will help you to think about it in a more reasonable way.
3. Go through them. Try to identify how each fear is holding you back from making a career change. Do you always approach your decisions thinking about your fears? Now think about what would happen if you remove fear from the equation and turn your obstacle into a problem to be solved. A challenge to overcome. You will find that removing fear will help you to be more creative about finding a solution. Think about how you will feel if you face your fear and overcome it!
This is a seemingly simple process, but it is very effective. It does take some practice, so start small. The next time you are faced with a big decision at work, or about your career, ask yourself how it makes you feel. If you find fear creeping up, go through the three steps above before making your decision. Going through these steps will help you feel more confident and make your decision with strength, not weakness.
