'Crisis Pending Here,' Companies Fear
The present is an unnerving time to be in business. Maybe it's always been thus, but the sense of a looming crisis is uncomfortably strong among the businesses, large and small, that Burson-Marstellar polled globally in its latest crisis-preparedness study.

Seventy-nine percent of the business leaders polled think they're only a year from a potential crisis and such feelings are strongest among technology companies.

Among firms who have experienced crises, nearly a third were associated with controversial company developments, like layoffs. Of special significance to crisis management practitioners, only a little better than half the companies polled (54 percent) have a plan for handling a crisis should one strike. Indifference and cost are "key barriers" to adding crisis plans to corporate readiness.

It's worth scouring B-M's 34 slides to get a sense of what's unnerving companies these days. Digital and online pressures, for example, are growing concerns.

B-M does a crisis survey every two years.
