Blogging Isn't For Everyone; Neither Is Piano Playing

Blogging is an increasingly important means of corporate, as well as individual, expression. But blogging involves writing skills and not everyone is a writer, just as not everyone is a piano player, another creative outlet. It puzzles us, therefore, to find Adam Singer on the Future Buzz blog headlining a post, "If Your Team Hates Blogging, You Need a New Team."

Adam's post is accompanied by a photo of a bear napping on a log — the suggestion being, apparently, that if you aren't blogging these days, you're napping at your job. But that doesn't follow. Every company may be increasingly a media company, but not every team member in every company is a blogger, or should be expected to be one.

"When you find an organization of A-list employees," Adam writes, "you'll find a mutual excitement about the fact that through blogging they are able to maintain a relationship with the world. That should be a job, not a chore."

"Blogging," he adds, "is like going to the gym for your brain." As though there's only one, newly crowned form of brain exercise, or relational skill.

Yet Adam adds a little further on, "You can't force people to write and expect it to resonate." That doesn't suddenly make them poor employees. They likely have other relational skills or they probably wouldn't be on board.

Chalk this post up as one muddled in the act of promoting respect for blogging and writting. Mentor employees in this field as well as others, bring them along as far as they are willing or able to go, but if they are proficient otherwise, don't expect everyone to be a writer/blogger just because social media is now the fashionable place for organizations to be.
