As much as we bicker and point fingers about good and bad advertising, the political correctness of the regulators, the silly topic of advertising to children, or the relentless sexual nature of ads, we have never pioneered the idea of just banning advertising. That hurts too many businesses across too many industries.
At least in the United States.
According to the Moscow Times, Putin just signed into law an act that would make a little over 1,000 paid subscription channels unable to receive advertising or advertising dollars. Yes, the author of the act is looking to create a "level playing field" for those channels that are free. Interesting. The article went on to say that about 20 percent of those channels are state-owned, and with this new law, another 20 percent will have to think really hard about continuing services in Russia. How sad.
Yes, we poke fun at our industry and our way of life. But in the wider scheme of things, our industry has it pretty darn good.
