This is more of a workaday item, but we're interested to note that the Chamber of Commerce in Chautauqua County, New York, has moved its newsletter online rather than keep maintaining a printed version. This may not be that exceptional. But the Chautauqua chamber notes that "the switch to an online publication represents a substantial cost savings for the organization." Not that a blog-like newsletter is undemanding in terms of creativity and élan, but as part of an overall organizational website, it can save printing and mailing costs. Other community-based organizations are no doubt recognizing that.
Yet the Chautauqua CofC may be further into the dawning future than other community groups, in commenting that, "The online newsletter is just one way we will reach out to members, while we continue our Chautauqua Business Weekly email bulletins, and delve even further into social media and other avenues of direct communication." Indeed: email bulletins and social media on the organizational plane. That sort of evolution will be interesting to watch in Chautauqua, "The World's Learning Center," and wherever else it occurs.
