A Bit of Founding History: The Colorado Coal Strike

1913–'14 were the years of the Colorado Coal Strike and PR founder Ivy Lee's successful management of that crisis, which Hannah Kelly on the Business Wire blog calls "one of the most important milestones in the history of public relations." Lee's adept handling of the strike situation, based on his 1906 Declaration of (PR) Principles, kept the Rockefeller family name free from reputational damage. Lest anyone think that PR is practiced nowadays by "winging it," refer them to the studiously crafted manner in which Ivy Lee proceeded. PR is no game, as most of us know.

(The accompanying photo shows Ludlow, Colorado, "a canvas community of 900 souls, (which) was riddled with machine guns shooting 400 bullets a minute. Then the tents were burned. The site is private property leaded by the miners' union, which has supported the colony seven months.")
