1. Contrary to what you may have heard, networking is not the fastest way to get a new job according to new research from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, which found that “those who use their network connections actually find jobs at a slower rate than the average job seeker. The most effective way is to directly contact potential employers.” WSJ 2/3/2014
2. To differentiate yourself from other applicants, make an offer to be of service to the hiring authority. Your competitors will all be trying to sell themselves as “the most qualified” or the most experienced, which puts the burden on the hiring authority to try and figure out what it all means. You should make it easy for him or her to know how you can help them by simply telling them some of the capabilities you can bring to the table.
3. If you are wanting to make a lateral move — i.e. same title, different company — rent or put together a list of target companies and send a career marketing letter directly to the most-likely hiring authority, or to that person’s boss.
4. Use the USPS to communicate with whomever you are trying to reach.
5. Purge the urge to include a resume in your initial letter.
6. Use high-quality stationary and envelopes. Print their name and address, but only put your initials, in script, in blue ink, in the upper left hand part of the envelope.
7. Use Georgia font, 12-point type.
8. Compose your letter in plain English, free of jargon. Write conversationally, but avoid being too familiar.
9. Limit the use of adjectives and understate.
10. Focus on getting interviews, not on getting a job.
