Alertness Can Make a Big PR Difference

However a specific review of police-community relations turns out in Chicago, a Chicago Tribune story points up the challenge of insuring that police everywhere, along with the 911 call takers who refer incidents to them, are sufficiently trained and alert to meet special challenges.

In the Chicago setting, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is “calling for a review of of how Chicago police respond to residents experiencing a crisis.” But along with a question over whether the police are maintaining the training edge they once had, the question of whether the 911 operators who dispatch calls to Crisis Intervention Team officers “are familiar enough with the training.”

Yes, matters like these are often overall system issues. If an entire array of relationships isn’t effectively in place, desired outcomes can’t be assured. And citizens, along with the reputation of police departments and the cities they serve, can get hurt.

This is public relations at its most telling level – when those with responsibilities for public safety possibly don’t grasp the system-wide implications of what they’re maybe not doing so well. Good PR requires continuing awareness by all involved.
