Get Back on the Phone, Guys, for Contact’s Sake

Ed Sherman on Poynter.org laments that he’s not using the phone to call PR people nearly as much as he resolved to do when the year began. “I am just as guilty as anyone,” he writes, “in being part of a horrible trend in media: Journalists and PR people have forgotten how to use the phone.”

“I am not saying nobody uses the phone,” Ed continues. “However, I am fairly confident about this thought: Perhaps not since Alexander Graham Bell unveiled his new invention has the phone been used less in media interactions at many levels.”

Ed recalls being with a reporter who didn’t answer her phone when it rang: “I don’t answer the phone unless someone has an appointment to call me,” she explained.

The problem: “We rely on emailing and texting at our own peril,” the peril being a growing loss of human contact and connection. Email provides provides connection, but not contact. As time passes, we’re likely to be finding that there’s an all-important difference between them.
