Communication Remains a Most Challenging Discipline

To start the week, here’s a mini-essay from the Holmes Report on one of the most challenging aspects of public relations – the reality of how difficult communication is to practice and master. What’s so difficult about speaking out? Everything, if you don’t understand the discipline of communication as accurate, pertinent utterance.

“God weeps” Pope Francis’ said in Philadelphia in discussing sexual abuse of children by members of the Catholic clergy. Who will soon forget that moment? It was one of appropriately clear communication.

“Despite the obvious importance of communications,” the Holmes post by Finsbury PR notes, “there is indeed much enduring truth to the threadbare cliché that the discipline is seldom among the top priorities of CEOs and other leaders.”

So true, in part because it can be awfully uncomfortable to grasp.
