Valeria Maltoni, on her Conversation Agent site, introduces us to Dr. Brenè Brown talking (by means of great video graphics) of the crucial differences between empathy and sympathy. 

 “Hey, I know what it’s like down here and you’re not alone.” That’s empathy. Sympathy is more like, “Ooh! Gee.” Spend some time with this presentation.
