Pulitzers in a Declining Craft – Show Due Regard

Public relations people need to be extra mindful of the perilous existence of contacts in the print media, even as they turn to digital media outlets to get their stories told. It’s a tough grind for journalism practitioners as the story of Pulitzer-prize winning, but now former, reporter Rob Kuznia makes clear.

“Print journalism at the local level is a scary place to be when you’re pushing 40,” Kuznia, formerly of the Daily Breeze in Torrance, CA, said after it was announced that he had won a Pulitzer for work at the Breeze. He left there for a stronger employment situation.

And here, from PRNewser, is a report on another Pulitzer winner, Natalie Caula Hauff, of The Post and Courier in South Carolina, who did the same thing, for personal reasons, not "with any issues with the paper."

The Washington Post joins the discussion with a post, "Why the PR industry is sucking up Pulitzer winners." It has to do with "the collapse of the business model for regional news outlets and of the forces pulling on journalists outside a few insulated cities."

Now an executive editor in the newspaper group that apparently oversees the Daily Breeze is vowing to do what it takes to get Kuznia back.
