Baseball Showing Empathy For Its Spanish-Speaking Players

The New York Times has a wonderful story about how Major League Baseball “has been working with the players’ union on an initiative this season to encourage every team to have a Spanish-speaking interpreter to help players communicate with the largely English-speaking news media in their native language.”

This is really identifying with your players and their fans or potential fans, a relational home run. Players from Spanish-speaking countries “accounted for 22 percent of the opening day rosters last season,” The Times notes. And few baseball reporters covering the teams are bilingual.

The idea is to have all players contribute to the media coverage of their teams on an equal linguistic basis.  Thus the old ball game becomes continually new. Very nice.
