Relational Tides of the First Order |

Time to take a few moments out to consider public relations in the broadest, grandest sense imaginable — relationships between civilizations — and where that could lead us. In a Wall Street Journal commentary on the Charlie Hebdo killings in Paris, Christopher Caldwell writes about how European countries unwittingly desensitized themselves to relationships with their streams of Moslem immigrants.
But how sensitive are any of us to such matters, and don’t we need to be? How adequately relational are we in regard to other peoples? The question arises in reading Caldwell’s piece along with a web meandering by Robert Haastrup-Timml, “Has a Clash of Civilisations really begun?” Don’t know, but the question is timely and central enough that, as Robert suggests, I’ve just downloaded Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations (the Kindle version).
It’s time to start getting aware of, and educated on, relational currents of the first order. Maybe there’s a role for all of us, PR pros especially, in helping to quiet them, to make them more constructive as they interact in today’s churning world.
