Cyber PR Stalkers Behind the Financial Scenes

Who has real PR heft these days, if only in a negative sense? One group of candidates that may not immediately occur to you are the IT minions who work behind the scenes at, say, J. P. Morgan Chase & Co. or other major companies. Encounter a headline on the front page of The Wall Street Journal like “J.P. Morgan Breach Hit 76 Million Households” and you’ve got a big-time relational drag indeed. 

J.P. Morgan spokespeople are hastening to explain that hackers who stole customers’ contact information this summer “only” got their names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses, not their passwords or Social Security numbers. Whew, we’re relieved, aren’t we? 

With the centrality of computers in today’s economy, unstinting efforts need to be given to warding off hackers, if that’s even assuredly possible. Or else, after the earlier, even more dire, revelations of cyber vulnerability at Adobe Systems, Target and Home Depot. we’re going to have a truly big-time confidence problem in the stability, not just of a company or two, but the entire U.S. economy. Get our relational drift?
