PR and and Digital Budgets are Up: Uncork the Champagne!

Great news for PR practitioners: looks like brands are upping their PR spend, with the highest increases since 2012. According to the latest IPA Bellwether Report, PR budgets in the UK were boosted in the second quarter of this year, which followed a sustained trend toward higher marketing costs.

Reviewed quarterly, the survey found that companies increased their PR budgets by 3.9 percent during the April to June period, exceeding the 3.4 percent recorded for April to June 2013.

Overall, marketing budgets are on the upswing as well, recording a 15.2 percent increase.

So what is sparking this marketing increase?

Internet marketing is king, recording a higher increase than any other category, with an upward revision of 4.7 percent.

What About in the U.S.?

Digital marketing budgets are up here, rising by 10 percent in 2014, following a double-digit percentage increase the prior year, according to Gartner’s Digital Marketing Budgets Increase, Reflecting Focus on Customer Experience report.

Not surprisingly, the largest increases were in digital or online advertising, mobile, ecommerce, and the corporate website.

James Goddard, CEO of JJ Marketing, believes the UK PR budget increases bode well for continued growth in PR spend for the rest of 2014.

"We are certainly witnessing increased convergence across disciplines and seeing more integration across bought and earned media,” said Goddard. "These figures should send a very upbeat message to the wider economy."
