PR in Russia More a Mishmash than Here

With nasty rumblings continuing in U.S.–Russian relations ("Things could get ugly fast...and in multiple directions," Secretary of State John Kerry says in today's Wall Street Journal), a group of Russian public relations students has been visiting Towson University in Maryland and loving "the friendliness of American culture." "The atmosphere is very nice and we are very thankful," says one of them.

An article on the visit posted by Towson on the Web provides some insights into public relations as practiced in Russia, where "it is a very young profession, (historically) only the government had done PR," said one of the students. There appears to be less distinction in Russia between advertising, PR and marketing than in the U.S. "We recognize how much we need to do in Russia in advertising, PR and social media," said another visiting student.

Wouldn't it be great if the two countries could concentrate on such things, rather than the current nastiness over the Ukraine?
