A Shout-Out to Creative Folks

For all the flack that we as Flacks take, I thought it was worth giving a shout-out to our brothers-in-arms (sisters-in-arms as well) in the creative field.

Inevitably, if we’ve been at it long enough, we’ve advised a client to try something that didn’t work, and last week it seems as though the creative team behind a Taco Bell ad came under fire because of an ad they created. (Note: this piece continues the unofficial Fast Food Frenzy kicked off on Tuesday by Flack Me’s own Shawn Paul Wood).

I digress.

Long story short, the creative team behind Taco Bell’s ads created a spot that said bringing a veggie plate to a party is like “punting on fourth and one” and that everyone at the party will secretly resent the bringer of the veggie plate. Full story courtesy of The Christian Science Monitor here.

Naturally, the Center for Science and Public Interest intervened, asking Twitter followers to ask Taco Bell to pull the ad, which they did. (There’s no way that Taco Bell Spokesman was thrilled about having to say ‘We didn’t want anyone to misinterpret the ad’).

The ad got a smirk from me, and unless I am missing something, Taco Bell tacos actually come with veggies on them. At what point did it stop being okay to be funny?

So here it is, from a Flack to a Creative: Sorry you had a rough day. And by the way, Mr. or Ms. Creative, perhaps we can agree that the folks protesting should go eat some bacon. If they’re not sure about the suggestion, they can always refer to this decision flow chart.
