The role of search engine optimization (SEO) and PR go hand in hand, and I’m not talking about overflowing your press releases with keywords and links, either. Try online marketing made easier with social media. That’s correct; there is a new team player on the league of content marketing that involves social networking, video, bookmarking, and blogging. It is known as social media optimization (SMO), and it is extremely vital to the field of public relations and online marketing. SMO and PR are a necessary marriage, needed to build a successful online campaign.

As we all know, SEO is a way of modifying your website to get a high rank when discovered in search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Unlike its predecessor, SMO is cost-effective since most social networking sites are free. This ensures a high return on investment (ROI). Primarily, SMO involves four components; content, keyword optimization, social media distribution outlets, and the measure of impact on your audience(s). It all boils down to this: SMO can be used to garner awareness of your company’s clientele and the services you provide. Below is a list of examples that will be made more visible if you use SMO techniques.

Examples of visible PR items:

  • Press releases

  • Letters to the editor

  • Online newsrooms

  • Electronic press kits

  • Corporate blogs/vlogs

  • Webinars/podcasts

  • Newsletters

  • Digital interviews

Lee Odden of TopRank Online Marketing Blog revisits 16 rules for making SMO easy to attain. And yes, Odden also provides a useful list of free tools for making the metrics and measurement of SMO effortless.
