The ability to deflect gathering emotional storms is critical to effective PR, not to mention living well. Writing on All About Public Relations, Sara Fletcher, of TalentSmart, notes the importance of "Connecting Emotional Intelligence with PR." We spent time mulling the subject years ago via Daniel Goleman's "Emotional Intelligence." It was time well spent.

"Self awareness," Sara writes, "is the individual's ability to perceive emotions and stay aware of them as they happen.... Keeping emotions in check will help professionals maintain their cool and better serve as a representative and spokesperson."

"Simply understanding your emotions is not enough," Sara adds, " — you also need to be able to manage those emotions and adapt to any situation."

We picked up the "emotional stoplight" graphic from Daniel Goleman, and it's been useful — and comforting — to keep around. Stay cool.
