PR Take Note: Bing Now Providing Social Leads

With PR becoming increasingly involved with the Web and social media, Gary Goldhammer on his Below the Fold blog advises folks to get acquainted with the new Bing approach to searches. Bing's aiming to become a broader, more socially engaged alternative to Google. Its searches, Gary notes, now include "social recommendations from multiple sources including Facebook and Twitter (and yes, Google Plus)." Search thus becomes a form of conversation, he adds.

Gary acknowledges that Microsoft, Bing's owner, is one of his clients, but says he doesn't work on Bing. Whatever; the proof is in the searching. For example, Gary notes, "If you're looking for a good sushi restaurant in Los Angeles, Bing will find Facebook friends who posted about sushi in LA and may have a recommendation for me. It's search with a pulse. It's not ever a search anymore — it's discovery." 

As the Bing approach catches on, and we're predicting it will — Google is, of course, including Google Plus social networking results in its searches — the Web increasingly will be the place to be for PR people and their clients. And Web presence will include all stages of life. We can't help but note that United Hospice in Rockland County, N.Y., has been on Facebook since 2009 and started a Twitter feed last year — under social media prompting from a board member, Ann Byne, of the marketing firm The Byne Group in nearby Suffern.

We don't know what Yahoo! is doing in social media, but that's probably worth checking out too.
