Are you a recent college graduate looking to jumpstart your career in PR?
If you answered Y-E-S to the above question, look no further. I have a few tips that will help you in your transition from backpacks to briefcases. The college days are officially over, and it's time for the unwanted reality check: obtaining your first job.
As Oprah Winfrey once said, “I feel that luck is preparation meeting opportunity.” If this is true, then one must be willing to make some necessary changes to ensure that the door will open once opportunity appears.
Many employers are looking for YOU. Yes, you. They know that recent graduates are inexperienced, excited to work...oh, and cheap. With that being said, unlike other professionals, you actually have an advantage. And to ensure that your competitive advantage works in your favor, you may just want to do the following:
Network
We have all heard the saying, “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” Relationship building is one of the many instrumental components of PR. Relationships should be based on trust and being genuine. By networking with industry professionals, you are opening up yourself to a surplus of mentors. Professionals who have expertise and knowledge of the industry can be the silver lining to one’s professional growth and success. As a result, digital platforms that we are all familiar with allow us to stay in the loop and build upon these relationships. For example, LinkedIn has allowed many to stay in touch with professional organizations such as the PRSA (Public Relations Society of America), professors, students, and professionals.
Get Biz Savvy: Buy Business Cards
There is nothing corny about being a junior-level person with business cards. In fact, having business cards provides a serious plus. People have used business cards for decades. Why? Because business cards:
-
Look professional.
-
Are hassle-free and accessible; no finding a pen and paper.
-
Are an effective marketing tool that promotes brand awareness of the business or contact.
Create Your Online Portfolio
Stand out in the crowd. Do something different. It does not matter if you majored in English or Advertising; employers want proof. It's a bit cliché, but seeing is believing. Many employers will ask for writing samples. Stay one step ahead and create an online portfolio; a compilation of your greatest works. Employers not only want someone who is smart, but also someone who is talented. Do just that: showcase your talent. There are websites such as http://www.wix.com that allow you to create free sites.
Have a 30–60 Second Pitch
When it comes to employers, you have to know how to sell yourself. When you're asked to speak about yourself, a future employer does not want to hear that you are the youngest of three, you own a Rottweiler named Manny, and you can awkwardly make your eyes meet. Instead, you need to promote your accomplishments, relevant internship experience, and greatest attributes.
Good luck!
