On October 21, 2015, iPhone and iPad users of the sailor speech variety rejoiced. Apple’s latest software release, iOS 9.1, included a plethora of emojis, though none as unexpected and anticipated as the middle finger emoji.

Never mind the added Vulcan salute and “I love you” gesture in American Sign Language emojis — it’s all about that middle finger!

Some Twitter users confessed to not using the new bird flipping gesture that much, though they begged for it prior to its debut and praised its entry into the Apple emoji world. Absence truly does make the heart grow fonder.

At present, iOS 9 exists on nearly sixty-six percent of active iPhones and iPads. This increase came from two weeks prior, which had iOS 9 on sixty-one percent of active iPhones and iPads. This jump in use could be due to the release of the latest emojis, which may have tempted a younger crowd to update to their devices to iOS 9.1. Young adults heart emojis!

Other tempting non-gesture-related emojis added to the recent lineup include:
  • Shopping bags
  • Prayer beads
  • Skull and crossbones
  • Robot face
  • Unicorn face
  • Dove of peace
  • Cheese wedge
  • Burrito
  • Joystick
  • Fleur-De-Lis
Now you can counter the middle finger emoji from an iOS-using comrade with a dove of peace emoji! Life is good.
