Have you ever thought about how many hours a day you spend on social media? Now multiply that by 7 days week, 4 weeks a month, 12 months a year, and 10 years. Wow. How many years have they lost? At the age of 24, my use of social media is slowly dwindling. For my 12-year-old sister, it’s a vital part of life. Studies show that although social media can be a great tool, it’s becoming more detrimental for youth worldwide.

Researchers at Glasgow University questioned 467 teens to see if there is a correlation between amount of social media usage and state of mind. The two lead researchers, Dr. Heather Woods and Holly Scott, asked the teens about how and when they use social media. They also looked at their sleep quality, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and emotional investment into social media.

Conclusion: The demand to be readily available at all times is causing anxiety. "Adolescence can be a period of increased vulnerability for the onset of depression and anxiety, and poor sleep quality may contribute to this,” said Dr. Woods. “There is a constant link between the well-being of a person and the amount of social media that they use.”

Can you imagine the stress? As an adult, I get stressed about how many likes I’m going to get. I think a post is cute, but what if no one else thinks it’s cute? What if they don’t like it? As a teen, I was cyber bullied — imagine being bullied at school, then coming home and it still continues.

Everything we do has an effect, but we can control our use of social media. Let’s model this for our youth and teach them about self-care.
