Facebook: Bringing Us Closer to AI One ‘Moments’ at a Time

What are moments? Why, they’re the small happenings that make up life. Oh, your were asking about Moments, capital ‘m.’ Moments is Facebook’s most recent app release.

Designed to take scan all the unshared photos in your camera roll, Moments is capable (thanks to one of Facebook’s impressive, albeit a little frightening, algorithms) of two things: recognizing your friends’ faces and tagging them accordingly, and grouping photos by occasion.

So what’s the big deal?

To be fair, Moments doesn’t require an all-powerful super computer or AI to run, but Moments does give us a glimpse into what’s going on at the Facebook Artificial Intelligence Labs (FAIR).

The future of social media revolves around platforms' abilities to comprehend and contextualize user-generated content and data as it happens. The better a platform is at accomplishing these two tasks, then the easier it is for a platform to customize and personalize each user’s feed. One route for making this hyper-personalization and understanding a reality might be AI. At some point in the not too distant future, it might be possible to ask Siri something as casual as: “Siri, are any of my old college buddies in town?”

Along with virtual reality (specifically with Oculus Rift tech), and bringing the Internet to those around the globe who are without, AI is at the forefront of the Facebook agenda. While the possibilities for AI are endless, the potential ramifications are also potentially endless – and this is where many of the world’s brightest minds start to hesitate. From Stephen Hawking to Elon Musk, some of are greatest thinkers can’t help but to think twice.

What do you think? Is it AI more likely to lead us into a social media golden age, or return us to the dark ages?
