Brian Williams has been having a hard time, especially in the social media court of public opinion. The once infallible news anchor has been laying low for the last several months after news broke that he had embellished details of events he had been involved with, including a military helicopter crash.

Williams was suspended without pay from his position as host and managing editor of NBC Nightly News. In the following months, he said little publically, leasing to wide speculation about what would ultimately be done with him.

This week, NBC announced that Williams would be moved to MSNBC as an anchor there. The social media response was swift.

Many felt that the move was ridiculous considering Williams’s credibility is essentially nonexistent. There were a number of tweets of dismay that Williams was not fired outright. And, of course, there were a great many posts poking fun at the entire ordeal.

The overall social media sentiment toward the move was fairly negative. Though, while many social media users blasted NBC’s decision to keep Williams, they also supported the decision to name Lester Holt as the new host of the Nightly News. In addition to being seemingly impeachable compared to Williams, his appointment makes him the first African American anchor named as host on the show.
