Pictures are the New Words

Snapchat says the future is all about pictures. To prove it, the company’s CEO deleted every tweet he ever posted.

Evan Spiegel said that today’s communication is about instant expression, and that “ephemeral media” is a vital part of messages. “Today, pictures are being used for talking,” Spiegel said in a YouTube video.
In the video, Spiegel explains how Snapchat works, and how that is why it is so popular. “It is about instant expression – showing people who you are in the moment.”

It is his live-in-the-moment mentality that led him to delete his tweets. He’s not the only one at the company deleting. Co-founder Bobby Murphy deleted his as well. They both have committed to communicating more primarily on Snapchat.

Snapchat also launched Discover in January. Discover is a content sharing site for editorial teams. According to the January blog post about the launch, “Discover is different because it has been built for creatives. All too often, artists are forced to accommodate new technologies in order to distribute their work. This time we built the technology to serve the art: each edition includes full screen photos and videos, awesome long form layouts, and gorgeous advertising.”

The photo-sharing site has been wildly popular since its release in 2011. Much of its appeal comes from the ability to have shared images expire and delete. The company has had stumbles related to privacy, including claims that photos were not actually being deleted when they expired. In response, Snapchat has promised to be more responsive and transparent in how it handles privacy.
