ISIS's Social Media Slip-up

Sometimes it just makes you happy when someone isn’t careful on social media. Especially when that someone is a member the terror group ISIS.

ISIS has been very successful at using social media to spread its terror agenda and recruit new members. The group is unnervingly social media savvy, finding the young and vulnerable online and using well-planned campaigns to radicalize.

However, not every ISIS member handles social media so deftly.

Recent posts by an ISIS member on an unnamed social media site gave the U.S. military enough details for find and destroy a terrorist command center. A surveillance team in Hurlburt Field, FL is credited with making the identifications that led to the center’s destruction. Identifying the location apparently took less than 24 hours.

The proliferation of social media has given terrorists a heightened presence in the United States. According to Michael Steinbach, assistant director of the FBI’s counterterrorism division, "The foreign terrorist now has direct access into the United States like never before.” Many governments, including the U.S., have become increasingly concerned about the radicalization of their citizens by ISIS over social media.

ISIS’s social media budget rivals that of major brands. Reportedly, ISIS spends about $2 billion on social media efforts.
