The JPEG is Being Replaced by BPG |

There’s going to be a sad day coming soon. The jpeg is on its way out. Our beloved friend has competition — someone vying for our coveted comfort with a tech term that lets us know our pictures will be cool if we save them in this format. The new file format is called BPG, which stands for “Better Portable Graphics.” Hopefully it’ll live up to the brand promise.
Now I know what my dad is talking about when he’s looking for an old product that just works and he knows is reliable. You just want to know it works. No hassles. No instructions to read. Plug and play.
The verdict on the new BPG is still out. Its creators say it compresses files to almost half the size of the typical jpeg, which is great! However, it isn’t much of an improvement because it’s still loosey goosey with graphics. It still loses some of the image quality after the super compression. I wish I could have seen this on an episode of HBO’s Silicon Valley. I wonder how much investors would have put up for this? Half the size and you lose some image quality, but hey, we’ll take $5 million in seed money.
After 21 years of making images accessible to people around the world, our friend the jpeg may be on its way out. Don’t worry; our little image will create a new meaning for your name and use you anyway. Just Party Endless until you’re Gone…see JPEG!
